The Husbandry
Institute is is dedicated to creating
consumer demand for sustainable, ethical animal farming and
its products. HI believes that the single greatest determinant
of how animals are raised is the voice of the consumer, or the
lack thereof.
Sustainable animal agriculture is achieved today by family
farmers who recognize and protect the environment and waterways,
treat all animals with respect and are committed to both their
welfare and the welfare of those who work on the farm. By raising
animals within the carrying capacity of the land, providing
their natural vegetarian diets, without feeding them antibiotics
or hormones, everyone will benefit from a safer, healthier diet
and environment.
Core ongoing programs at HI stem from the goal of providing
assistance in finding sustainable, family farmed meats. We believe
that through cooperative partnerships and strengthening the
relationships between existing organizations and programs, we
can achieve increased successes in bringing sustainably raised
foods to more people. Several important values steer the quality
of our efforts at HI:

Education
and Messaging
Food and meat provide fun and widely popular and attractive
opportunities to share information with the public and targeted
groups about the numerous immediate and far-reaching benefits
their food choices can have. We seek to increase the capacity
of groups working with food issues to provide this information
to guests, customers, and members easily, inexpensively and
effectively.

Partnership and
Collaboration
Opening our doors in January, 2005, we saw the opportunity and
need to maximize our contribution through efficiently introducing
new projects, but ultimately, we seek to support and contribute
to existing efforts promoting sustainably raised and produced
foods. HI will focus on opportunities to enhance communication
within, recognition, and efficiency of campaigns, promote the
inclusion of those involved in all sectors of our food system
to develop creative, long-lasting, and agreeable solutions for
sustainable foods.
